Wires - Pictures from transfer day - June 27

This is from the Wires - June 25, 2007 (they are so great to send emails and more importantly PICTURES!!)
This first picture is Elder Gaxiola in Logontown

We spent a large part of the day tending to the missionaries 1st to Congotown where we dropped off a case of BOM and copies of pictures Elder Gibson with his companion were long gone by our arrival we took Elder Rogers and Elder Agahma into the District building (They often teach there as it's easy to have a quite spot for investigators) in the middle of a terrific rain storm they were grateful for the ride and the loan of my umbrella for the return trip. Next Stop Paynesvill Apartment where Elder Lamb , Elder Muthwa and Elder Baliwame loaded up Elder Baliwame's things as he is being transferred to the other District, Elder Muthwa leaves tomorrow for Sierra Leona to work there and Elder Lamb awaits his new companions arrival in the afternoon tomorrow. On to Dualla to drop off Elder Baliwame and pick up Elder Djonku, Elder Seawright was off being a missionary. At our final destination Logontown Elder Gaxiola received family picture you sent and was really excited. A special thank you for your wonderful Elders and their dedicated work to the Lord.
Love Sis Belinda Wire

This is from earlier in the day before the Wires left to visit and move missionaries:

This is a picture of Elder Seawright (red shirt) and Elder Cooke (missionary outfit) I am sorry but I don't know the African Elder names :(

It was a rough week for the Elders. Elder Cooke went home and he was sharing the Duala Apt with Elder Seawright. The American Elders know they can see one another in the states when they go home but the African Elders know this is Good bye for this life. Elder Ajei, Elder Cooke's companion was heart sore and there was nothing you could say ease the pain. We forget how fortunate we are in our life of choices and opportunites. There are more changes this week as it's transfer week Elder Lamb will get a new companion Elder Mogosti ,Elder Gaxiola will have a new Elder in the Apt Elder Djonku. Nothing changes at Elder Gibson and Elder Rogers Apt. We will see them all today and deliver copies of the BOM so I'll try for pictures.

Misc Info

This is taken from letters to Amy and Mom:

He says that they cook on a campchef stove pretty much. They have a shortage of gas so they no longer heat their shower water on the stove, so it is cold water showers for now (I would have thought they would want a cool shower because it is so hot and that would feel good – but guess not)

He told Amy that is rains almost every day and it is nice not to have the hot sun beating down on him.

And the GOOD NEWS!!! When President Squires came this past weekend he FINALLY got pouch mail letters!!! I was beginning to think all of the letters that have been sent were going into a black hole somewhere!!

New Roomies!!

hey everyone,

this week has been super busy. i got a new companion elder Mogotsi. he is from botswana and he is a great guy. elder ukpong also got a new companion elder lauti. he is tongan and from salt lake city. we get along great and it is so nice to have someone to talk to about things that i know. we are having a great time.

we have instituted the hometeaching for the elders quorom and we are hopin they will pick up where we left off. we have been teachin a lot of people in the rain and we also had zone conference this week. president squires gave a great talk on forgetting the things from home and working on the things here. i know the lord will take care of my family and president gave a great quote from hymn 30. "our useless cares from us to drive" i have been thinking about it a lot and it has helped. jenny has been doing a lot of stupid things and i wish i would never find out about them but i do and i am trying to drive her from my mind.

i am doing fine and the rain comes down all the time. i got like 26 letters and 20 were from my grandma pay. she is more worried about me then my mom i think. all is well and i love the letters so everyone please write me!
thanks for everything

The rainy season has officially arrived

hey bloggers,
this week has been good. the rainy season is here and i have only seen the sun on sunday this week. it is nice to have clouds but when it starts raining it just pours like crazy. the days it is cloudy i take my rain coat and it ends up not raining. the days i dont think it will rain i leave my rain coat home and it pours and we end up taking refuge in some persons house and try to share a gospel message with them.
my mom and aunt have just both sent me a package and i am excited to get it. President Squires comes on friday and i am hoping that he brings me some letters. it is hard to remember what everyone emails me and the only thing i usually remember is the number of guys jenny is going out with. (2 and rising by the way.) owell i try not to think about her cause everytime i do i start getting mad.
we found out about transfers. my companion is going to the other zone in monrovia and i am getting a AP for my new companion. he is a great guy and i cant wait to show him how much walking there is every day in gardnersville. also elder Muthwa is going to sierra leone and elder Ukpongs new companion is fresh from the mtc and all we know is that he is supposed to be american.
all is well and we baptised 3 more people yesterday. the baptisms here are a little different from home. almost no one comes and they never start on time. owell at least we are finding people who are willing to come unto the Lord.
all is well and no worrys i am fine and havent gotten sick anymore. i could really use some letters though. it is hard to not know anything about home except your girl is gone and your dad has no job so send me some good letters.
thanks for the support

Church in Liberia

This is from the Wires and I thought everyone might be interested in hearing about Church and seeing what it really looks like. I think this was sent out in April.

This group of people will be made a formal unit in the church this next month they have been going to church for years and building but with no officail unit , branch or ward connection, they have been under the arm of another full Branch now they are about to be their own leadership this is very exciting to us and them. There is very little chance at this time that any of your Elders will serve here but the pictures are true of the homes they teach in everyday, Love Belinda (Sister Wires)

Subject: Harbel, Kakataw and us
Greetings from the Far Side of the World: This Sunday (Today) we went to Kakataw for services. It is pushing two hours to get there from where we live, and 'out in the bush,' although we are on a paved road all the way. It is the northern exit from Liberia to Sierra Leone, and other than being surrounded by Firestone Rubber trees, it doesn't have much else to proclaim itself to the world.

The Saints there are a Church Unit, trying to get to be a branch. They meet at the George Washington Carver Institute (College?), and have about 70 people attending. We had a nice meeting, I got to teach Gospel Essentials and Belinda taught Primary and Relief Society. That is pretty normal, when the Senior Couples show up they want to hear the gospel from us. The only problem is that we haven't picked up the local accent, and we're never sure that they understand what we are saying. Rained hard last night, and some of this morning, so it was cool all morning long.

And Here's Belinda's Harbel tale of services last Sunday:

Today we visited the Harbel Unit, that is located 1 1/2 hours from home, on the Firestone Rubber plantation. Everyone there is employed by Firestone one way or the other, in the factory, schools, churches, stores, etc. That does not mean they have a lot of money, it just means they have a job. The Unit meets in a one room building with a lean-to with a dirt floor. The meeting began with 28 people, we brought 5, and one other was the visiting High Councilman. By the end of the meeting another 10 had arrived. There is no electricity, no fans, no lights, no microphone. As many African buildings it has no window, just openings and bars.
As we gathered for Sacrament Meeting, we listened to the neighbors clacking dishes, correcting and punishing children. The young man sharing his testimony, before he departs on his mission, was drowned out by the disel trucks passing just feet away from our seats, in, what at that time was the chapel.

As the time comes to divide for classes, we are directed to the dirt floor lean-to. Benches and wooden student desk chairs are available for seating. One end of the room is where the combined YM &YW meet, all 10 of them, while we attended Primary at the opposite end with about 12 primary children of all ages. The children opened, welcomed, sang, and prayed, almost as if by magic - no visible instructions. Then the teacher had each child recite something, they closed in the name of Jesus Christ, but I was unable to hear or discern what each one recited, because of the noise from the community right outside our windows. Then we sat in silence for about 5 minutes (?), when the teacher asked, Sisters do you have something for us? Vicki gave a sharing time, and I followed with another sharing time, it was a lot of fun. Then the teacher began teaching, although we could not hear her, but each child recited some part of the 10 Commandments, so I have to assume that her lesson was about the Commandments. We left there and attended Relief Society in the "Chapel" room. The RS meets in the corner by the open doorway that leads to the Primary lean-to area, with little ones in and out, crying, and the roar of the street. Meanwhile, the Priesthood meets in the opposite corner of the same room. Fortunately I have developed a small skill in lip reading and was able, with the teacher's aid in sharing examples with her hands of confirmation and baptism (in and out of water, and laying on of hands) I soon came to know the lesson topic. Amazing what you can glean from a discussion, when sound is not an option.

Oh, another interesting event we had this past week was a little excitement we happened upon while returning from Caldwell on Saturday. When we reached Caldwell Junction (the crossroads of Caldwell road, and UN drive), there was the usual snarl of traffic, but we made the turn OK and headed south for a short way. Then just before we reached the New Kru Town turnoff we got stuck in a traffic jam - which is not only common, but fairly usual at this area. However, we noticed a rather large gathering of people, and after watching for a few minutes, we also noticed a large amount of police and some dressed in riot uniforms with shield and hard hats. We recognized that something was about to take place, but were helpless in the stalled traffic. The reason for the jam was some of the police were holding up traffic, directing three UN armored personnel carriers out of New Kru Town, and a couple of empty trucks. Suddenly about 200 people started running in all directions, away from the turnoff, and less than a minute later large stones, rocks and chunks of building blocks began to rain down, coming from within the New Kru area. One of the rocks hit a cop, who had been standing in the back of a pickup truck, and when that happened the cops who had been holding up traffic, causing the jam, took off running too. The cars in front, and around us were also beginning to become targets, and all of us wasted no time in leaving that area. For about 200 yards, we had a downpour of rocks and such, but never got a scratch. Belinda got on the phone and contacted the Elders who were then in Point Four and New Kru Town, and told them to get inside, and when they felt it safe enough to return to the Mission house at Tweh Farms. Elder Cooke and Adjei were in the Logan Town Chapel at a meeting, and were told to spend the rest of the afternoon there, and if it had quieted down, to then head for the Mission house. Seems these riots are becoming more frequent, I imagine they will fall off with the onset of the Rainy Season. We found out later that the riot was caused when the police arrested a gang leader at his home in New Kru Town. Kru is the name of one of the tribes here in Liberia. Now since everyone in Africa is black, there is no racial prejudice among them, but everyone also belongs to different tribes, and that is what they must use for a substitute for racial prejudice. Kind of reminiscent of Watts riots, and such in Los Angeles.

By the way, I have been wanting to tell you that the Pineapples, Mangoes, Bananas, and Potatoes over here are far superior to any I have eaten in my life. I don't understand why this country isn't in to commercial agriculture (?). The seasons are wonderful for growing, 6 months of sunshine, and 6 months of rain, and all the foods mentioned are being harvested all year long. The ground will obviously grown anything you plant, the land is wasted on mostly impenetrable jungle, and the people do not have any employment.

The start of the rainy season

Its raining, its pouring, the old man is snoring....
This is Elder Cook, Elder Seawright, Elder Lamb, and I don't know the names of the last 2 elders :(
This is from the Wires: Do these young Elders look familiar? They are the hope of Liberia and their hearts are filled with love for the people.....
They are modeling their wonderful new raincoats. The rainy season is almost upon us and with 2-300 inches of rain in THREE MONTHS we are all going to feel like ducks real soon - so we're gearing up.

From Tracy because Cory asked: YES!! Spencer took his own rain coat and does indeed have one - and sorry the pictures are bad/grainy - don't tell Cory :)

Finally - an email & lesson on how to drink water

The time is flying by! i have already been in the field for over a month and i have finished the Book of Mormon in that time. so if you try to tell me it is too long to read in a year too bad cause i did it in a month and loved it!
i am doing fine. dont worry about me getting sick i healed the very next day and sister wire didnt even need to come visit me.
i know that i am late to be writing but the cafe was down on monday so i am here today. today actually the generator died and i had to start this email again so i might leave some tihngs out that i wanted to send.
i am so glad it is the rainy season. it is somewhat cooler on the days it rains. the temperature when its raining is about 85 and it is nice. it kind of sucks when the next day it is 100 in the blazing sun. but i havent seen the sun in 5 or 6 days. it either pours or is cloudy all the time.
things you should know if you come to liberia. dont drink a "big" bag of water. this is well water and can make you sick. you want to buy mineral water. which is purified water. instead of water bottles they just use plastic bags. just a ziploc bag with water in it. you just bite off the corner and suck the water out. it is pretty effective. one other thing you should know is that there really isnt a trash system and everyone just throws thier trash on the ground. it makes the place smell not so nice. also you need to know that everyone honks thier horns for nothing. they just drive along honking for no reason. this is very annoying at 2 in the morning when you are trying to sleep. you should also know that the people here are always late. it is almost as bad as waiting for jenny to get ready to go out. so i guess i am learning more patience.
the people here are so great. one of our members sister appleton is way to nice to us and always feeds us and offers us food all the time. i am trying to keep some of my wieght but i am losing the battle. all i can say is that i will make john tired when we go hunting in a few years.
my area is one of the biggest and my companion isnt a good planner so we use most of our day to travel from one house to the other.
i finally got my first chance to go out in my area without elder balulwami. i went on splits with elder muthwa 2 times last week and we did great. it was wierd to be the one leading someone else. i guess that is what a senior companion feels like.
all is well and i heard my mom and gma are making a package so i should survive. thanks for the support and i cant wait to actually get a letter. still none yet but i am hoping president squires brings some next friday. all is well and dont worry about me i am doing fine.

Nothing better than a fresh pineapple!!

hey tell casey that i bought a huge pinapple last week and ate the whole thing! it was a million times better that the canned or anything i have every eaten. it is kind of expensive though so i can only eat it a few times a month.

we also get 150 US dollars to spend every month and 20 goes to the apartments food supply. then we get to exchange the american money for liberian dollars and the rate is 1 US = 60-63 liberian dollars. the pineapple was 75 liberians so it was cheap to you but 60 liberians is a lot of money here and you can buy a lot.

anyways keep up the good work.
i am out of time so let everyone know that they should write and email me.

Email to Amy Lyn

amy lyn,
the time is flying by huh? i feel like i just left nice cold utah. how is having all my jobs to do all summer? ha ha dont worry i have plenty to do here. i get up every day at 6:30 shower with a bucket, then study for 2 or 3 hours. then i get in a tiny little car packed with people just like at the circus where all the clowns jump out. then i walk around all day with all the kids screaming white man, then i teach people about our church and try to get them to church. then i take another little taxi home and lay down and sleep for a long time.

Calm down - email from and to a "worrying" mother

Elder Lamb,

Are you seriously okay? Do you think it is malaria? Or something crazy like that? I am so glad that your companions gave you a blessing. The Priesthood is a wonderful and powerful thing. I am so glad that you are able to experience it first hand. It proves that there is a God and he knows and loves us. What REALLY is wrong with you – besides a fever? Your body probably wasn't used to the greasy Pringles. They make me sick. An Arabian shop? What else do they have there?

Where was zone conference at?

Love, Mom

Mom,

I am fine dont worry. i have every medicine in the world and i am feeling fine now. i might have to stay in tomorrow but that is ok. it wasnt the pringles it was a FM yesterday and i think that it is just a fever so calm down.

they have a few other things. hygiene items, a few cereals, no real milk so i dont buy cereal. yes i know amy would die here. foster clarks which is a cool aid type thing and many other random things lol.
zone conferrence was in down town monrovia. which is a nice long taxi ride. one of my new friends elder cooke from mesa AZ is leaving on the 25th this month and the rumor is that my companion is replacing him and the ap guy, with the i love bo shirt, is going to be my next companion. but this is just the rumor. i hope they bring another american to my apartment. i feel seggregated a little bit sometimes but i know they all love me there.
speaking of Gods power i almost just threw up but i said a small prayer and now i feel fine again.

All is well

mom,

i hope and pray that you stay in close touch with the petersons. they carry the spirit so strong they can make anyone feel happy and there are a lot of liberians still crying for them.

i have a fever of 104 but it is going down now. it sucks to sit around all day and sweat constantly. dont worry about me though. my companion and the other elders gave me a blessing and since then my head has stopped pounding.

i hope the petersons didnt scare you to much. liberia really isnt that bad if you follow all the rules and the spirit. i feel safe and i know the lord is watching over me. i will say that i would probably not come back unless i was on a mission and i had gods grace with me.

...the people here are great and i get plenty of food so dont worry.

i hope all is well and i cant wait for you next spiritual uplifting email.

love your son

June 9: Sick but doing fine

hello bloggers,

this week has been pretty good. we had zone conference and i got to talk with my mission president for a long time. we had a great chat and i am doing well. the topic we were talking about there is repentance. we had a great discussion and it was so nice to interact with the other elders in liberia.

my apartment is considered the celestial kingdom compared to the other apartments here. hopefully i get to stay for a while but only the lord knows when i will go. my companion is a great guy and we get along well.

we have a little arabian shop where they sell a lot of american things and today i went and bought some pringles and a twix bar. it tasted so amazing and then i started to feel sick. so i think that something i ate yesterday is bothering me. i asked my companion and the other 2 elders to give me a blessing and i felt well enough to come to the cafe and email now.

the people here are funny. they all love the white man and my companion gets jealeous sometimes that all the kids that used to play with him all run straight to me now lol. we get a fm ( free meal ) every sunday and usuall once during the week. the people all want to feed me all thier special african dishes and see how i like them. sister appleton is a very kind generous person and feeds us every sunday no matter what. her husband was a great lawyer and she is loaded in african standards. she calls us her sons and is always so nice.

we have been teaching a few investigators and our main focus is on retaining members and keeping people active. the people here will all tell you they promise they are coming to church and then i sit in the back of sacrament meeting and see that only a sparse few are there.

today has been pretty hard on me. i am sick and jenny is pretty much forgetting about me. the only thing i had today was a scripture that my mom gave me in D&C 100. this chapter is so great and it made me feel a lot better. even though my body temperature was 104. i took a very cold shower and layed down all day so i feel somewhat better now.

i have learned so much here. i have read the book of mormon so much everyday and i feel the spirit so strong when i do. i was teaching in sunday school yesterday and i bore my testimony on the prophet Joseph Smith. i thought that i was going to fall down from the spirit touching me so strongly. i know that this is the true church of god and that no one can shake my testimony. no matter what happens i am glad to be out here serving the lord.

thank you for all of the support and prayers. feel free to send an email to
spennylamb@gmail.com. i have plenty of time to read and i might even respond to you. but if not please keep writing and i am doing fine so dont worry.

Haircuts - food - upcoming zone conference

June 2, 2008

it is hot when the sun is beating down, but since it is the rainy season it has been relatively cooler.

president squires is in liberia for zone conference, aka stake conference. we get to have zone meeting tomorrow and we get to meet with the president for interviews.

i get to eat all kinds of wierd things for our free meals. they always have a sauce type thing on top of rice and that is all i want to know. i get to cook every 4 days and i am learing the 2 recipes we have. spagetti and stew. we only cook for break fast so it is just like on the movie elf when they have spagetti all the time. i am never going to eat spagetti or rice ever again when i get home. i am taking plenty of pictures and i will try and get one to you later.

tell bec that from now on i will cut my own hair. i found some hairclippers in the apartment that were broken so i took them apart and hot wired them and cut my hair very nicely.

elder rogers companion is the one that i replaced in gardnersville. he got the chicken pox from my companion lol. elder rogers is a cool guy and elder seawright knows the kesters and weston. he is a very funny guy and it is nice to talk with someone who knows the same things as i do. like the word hick.

the petersons left today :(. i gave them a letter for you and they have a bunch of videos with the people in liberia and me so i hope you go see them and get my letter and watch the video. i told them to give you a big hug for me.

we teach the same people most of the time and most people have the door wide open and they have no windows. just cinderblocks that have parts cut out to let air in. the people are very nice and almost all of them believe in God or are of a different church. the hardest thing we have to worry about is the law of chastity. there is a reason Aids is big here. another thing is you have to tell them church is at 8 so they will be there by 9 maybe. its kind of like waiting for Jenny lol.

The work is moving on great and we could have hundreds of baptisms but we are focusing on the self relient people who wont just come to the church for money. there are not very many people with money here so we just try our best and look for people to teach.

my companion and i get along great. the other 2 elders in our apartment are very cool and we are all addicted to monopoly. we get along great and joke around all the time.

all is well here in liberia and i am trying to get more pics lol.
